If you're new to Runescape, you've probably seen this huge map and wondered where to start.
Here, I'll give a brief explanation of each place.
Keep in mind, I did not complete all the quests on Runescape, so I don't have a full knowledge on many places, especially on their lore.
Press Ctrl+F to find a specific location!
Lets start with the West-Northern side of the mainland, on the peninsula with the fishing colony
Piscatoris Fishing Colony: At level 62 fishing, you can complete the "Swan Song" quest to gain entrance to this colony. Its greatest perk is the fishing spot for monkfish, one of the more common mid-leveled foods on Runescape.
Now lets go a bit South, to the far Western part of the map...
Prifddinas: Recently last year, Jagex turned Prifddinas into the "Elf City". Before that, for about a decade, that entire area of the map had nothing; It wasn't even accessible. Now, It's considered a place which the higher leveled players skill and bank. You can access this place after completing the quest Plague's End. This city provides new methods of training skills such as Herblore, Mining, Farming, combat, Divination, Agility, Crafting, Slayer, Prayer, and Thieving. The requirements to train here are high, I can barely use half of this city with my account being a total level of 2000.
South of Prifddinas...
Isafdar: You can gain access to this forest after the completion of the Regicide quest. It used to be popular for the secluded magic trees and grenwall hunter spot, but since the update of divine locations, resources gained from this area have crashed in price. Nonetheless, it is still helpful to get used to the layout of this forest for future quests.
Poison wastes: I've only found this place useful for the Catapult Construction and Plague's End quest.
Lletya: You can buy dye here, kill some elves, charge a teleport crystal, but most importantly, start the Plague's End quest. Outside the village, there are a few magic trees. This village also has the only bank in Lletya.
Now lets go to slightly West and far South, to the most southern peninsula of the Runescape mainland...
Mobilising Armies: As far as I know, this miame is only useful for upgrading your warrior, berserker, seers, and rangers ring.
Ascension's dungeon- Camping this place will give you the ingredients to make ascension crossbows, which are one of the best ranged weapons in the game. It's also a wonderful moneymaker, which can be seen on my forum post "ten hours at Rorarius".
Oo'glog: I don't know much about this place.
Now lets move a bit North...
Yanille: On world 31, people come to this town's house portal to borrow gilded alters and train their prayer. Remember: using bones on a lit gilded alter gives you 250% of the normal prayer experience!
Feldip Hills: You can hunt Chompy Birds here and use a glider
Gu'Tanoth: You can exchange a summoning pouch here for 70% of the shards used to make the pouch.
Fight Arena, Tree Gnome Village, and Port Khazard: As far as I know, these are "dead" places. The Fight Arena is only used as a quest (same applies for the tree gnome), I don't see anybody using the fishing trawler at Port Khazard. Tree gnome village has a Spirit Tree which can be teleported to if you need a bush patch for a farming run
Castle Wars is a miame. I only know it as "That thing comp-capers complained they needed to play 5000 games of"
Now lets move up a bit North...
Ardougne (East): I think of this place as a popular training spot for level-1 Thieving. Also, NEVER pull that lever by the West Ardougne gate! It teleports you to level 50 Wilderness
Ardougne (West): As a pro, I didn't know anything about this part of the city. As I did my first grandmaster quest, Plague's End, I learned so much about it! Unfortunately, I cannot spoil it.
West of the Battlefield: A hunter spot for Red Salamanders and the ZMI alter can be found here. Unfortunately, Runespan is considered the best way to train Runecrafting.
Clocktower: Do the Clocktower quest here
Tower of Life: This used to be considered a good place to make money (after the Tower of Life quest). As of now, I'm not so sure. People used to kill unicows here for unicorn horns. I guess it can be good for lower levels.
A bit to the North-West...
Tree Gnome Stronghold: This is where people used to train agility at level 1 (now I heard it's the Burthrope course that gives more exp). The swamp is a decent moneymaking zone for extreme-pros, as toads can be picked from here amd be sold to summoners. Other than that, Gnome Ball is considered one of the most useless things to do on Runescape.
-The Grand Tree provides a base for Gnome Gliders, which are useful for traveling around Runescape. It also has a Cooking based miame (which I believe nobody plays anymore). This miame can reward you with a rare gnome scarf.
Combat Training Camp: This was popular back in the earlier days of Runescape; Now it's considered an abandoned and useless place
Kingdom Of Kandarin
Fishing guild: You need 68 fishing to access this place (63 with an Admiral Pie). You can fish sharks here, and the bank is a common place for the hard clue scroll in Treasure Trails.
That red fence: slightly Northwest of the Fishing guild, this is where you start the "Dwarf Cannon" quest. You gain access to a Dwarf Cannon after this, which is useful for training ranged.
Ranging Guild: I'm pretty sure nobody uses this place anymore. It has a miame and some shops.
South of the Ranging guild, there's a farm which people commonly use for their farming runs.
A bit North of the Kingdom...
Barbarian Outpost/ Agility Training: Do the Bar Crawl miniquest! It gives you access to the Agility course, which is important for lower-level agility training. The Barbarian ***ault miame used to be active before EOC, but nowadays, it's usually played by private groups of friends looking for specific rewards.
A)Walk a Bit south of the Barbarian outpost... You will see a whirlpool. Jumping in here will give you access to the Ancient Cavern. With it, you will be able to kill Waterfiends (extremely popular for their EXP and Crimson Charm drop rate), Mithril Dragons, and you will be able to use Kuradel, a higher level slayer master, along with her dungeon.
B)A bit North... Lighthouse: Start the Horror From the Deep quest here
East of the Kingdom Of Kandarin...
Camelot: Some quests can be start here. More importantly, this is were you do the Kht's Training Ground, gaining access to Chivarly, Piety, Augury, and Rigour; These are the highest level prayers for the basic prayer book
Seers' Village: This place used to be popular for its flax fields, yew trees, and magic trees. As the economy changes, these spots are becoming more abandoned. This also applies to Mcgrubor's Woods.
Catherby: This is a wonderful place for skilling. It includes popular fishing spots for lobsters, harpoon fishing, an allotment patch, a bush patch, and a small port with charter ships. To cook the fish, there's a range next to the bank.
A bit North...
Rellekka (Freminnk Province): This is where you start many quests, my favorites being Royal Trouble and Lunar Diplomacy. Royal Trouble gives you better access to a personal kingdom, giving you free raw materials daily. Lunar Diplomacy gives you an entirely new spellbook (Lunar Spellbook) which has no combat and is based off of skilling.
A)Waterbirth Island: Take a boat from Rellekka to here. You can kill the Dagannoth kings, which will drop the Seers ring, Warriors ring, Berserkers ring, rangers ring, or the dragon hatchet. They use all three combat attack styles
B)Keldagrim Entrance: There's also an entrance in Taverly and the Grand Exchange. Keldagrim is the city of the dwarves. After the Forgiveness Of a Chaos Dwarf quest, you may kill Chaos Dwarves for a super rare chance at a dragon pickaxe drop.
C)A bit North of the Keldagrim Entrance, there's an icon of a paw. This is a frozen hunter area. It is known for its Azure skillchompas and Kyatts. These are usually hunted for money.
The entire brown and white area East of Rellekka...
Death Plateau, Troll Stronghold, Trollheim: I don't really remember this area so well. At level 61 Magic, a person can use the Trollheim teleport spell to get past the maze (after the Edgar's Ruse quest). This place is extremely dangerous for new players. There are trolls that stand at the top of the mountain paths and throw rocks at you.
A)The Troll Stronghold has a herb farming patch that never diseases.
B)God Wars Dungeon: Other than teleporting directly to the Dungeon, Trollheim is the second best place. The Dungeon is an extremely popular place for higher level moneymaking, where you kill large followers of Zamorak, Bandos, Armadyl, Nex, and Saradomin. Please seek a video guide for more information
North of the Troll zone: Trollweiss Mountain and Ice Path: I believe Trollweiss Mountain is accessed for the Troll Romance quest. The Ice Path is visited during the Desert Treasure quest, which gives access to the Ancient Magicks spellbook.
A)Far north of the Ice Path, a large fortress is seen. This is visited during the Temple At Senntisten quest. The entire fortress is a fun puzzle.
South of the Troll zone...
Burthorpe: This town, to me, is practically a member's advertisement zone. Players spawn here when they finish the tutorial. It includes some low level wolves which drop basic gear and some members-only items, a level 1 Agility course, some flax that you can pick but can't really use, and some shops.
Taverly: This small town has a Loadstone next to a house portal. This is also a place people commonly train Summoning.
Slightly east of Taverly...
Kingdom of Asgarnia: North of the goblin village, there's a spot which Zamorak Wine spawns. At level 33 magic, this is an amazing source of money for lower levels
A)Falador: The Artisans Workshop has a great place to AFK train smithing (although costly). A person could leave their computer for five minutes before having to come back. South of the Party room, there's a staircase which leads to a popular mining cavern. This is connected to the Mining Guild.
B)Dwarven Mine: Another method of entering the mines underneath Falador. Also, the Living Rock Caverns are near this entrance. This is a semi AFK-able place to mine Gold and Coal. Rocktails and Cavefish can also be fished here
Far South of Falador...
Crafting Guild: I never go here.
Dark Wizard's Tower: South of here, there's the Makeover Mage. He/she can change your gender and skin color
White Kht Camp: This is an amazing place for moneymaking. The mature grotworms commonly drop rune items. One of the toughest bosses on Runescape, the Queen Black Dragon, can also be killed here. This boss is arguably in the top 5 best moneymaking methods on Runescape.
Port Sarim: You can charter a ship here, go to Karamja, take a boat to Pest Control, or work on your player-owned-port.
Rimmington: Pretty much a dead town
South of Port Sarim...
There's a dungeon just North of Mudskipper Point. Inside it, there's another dungeon. At level 85 Dungeoneering, you can kill frost dragons, which drop bones worth 12-14k each
Clan Camp: Access your clan's citadel from here, or create a clan.
East of the Clan camp...
There's an allotment and herb patch just North of the cabbage field
Draynor Village: This used to be a good place to get seeds (from pick-pocketing the master farmer). People also used to cut willow trees here. Nowadays, I don't see many people.
South of Draynor Village...
Wizards' Tower: Runespan is located on the top floor of this tower. It is a popular, although unprofitable, method of training Runecrafting. At 50 Runecrafting, A person can access the Runecrafting Guild, which houses the Vis Wax machine.
North of Draynor Village...
Draynor Manor: This entire place is dedicated to two quests.
East of Draynor Village...
Lumbridge: This is where the old spawn after the tutorial used to be. Low levels can train their combat skills at the cow pen and goblin area, and there are low level trees scattered about.
A)Lumbridge Swamp: This is where most people will start their fishing and mining. You can find shrimp, copper ore, and tin ore here.
Far North of Lumbridge...
Varrock: I really don't see a point to this city anymore. It used to be popular for its sewers to collect red spider's eggs, the teleport to mine pure/rune essence, and the bank where people traded. I guess the museum is nice, you can exchange your "Strange rock" from skilling to build a statue
Grand Exchange: You will spend so much time here; It's one of the most popular places on Runescape! Buy/sell any tradeable items here based off of what other people are buying/selling that item for.
Slightly West of the Grand Exchange...
Edgeville: There are two yew trees. Next to that is a lever. Do not pull that lever! It teleports you to level 50+ wilderness, just like the Ardougne lever.
A)Monastery: Nothing interesting here. It used to be a popular place for low level combat training
B)Ice Mountain and Black Khts' Fortress: I ***ociate these two places to quests.
C)I'm not sure if it has changed over the past few years, but next to the yew trees, there should be a trapdoor. The dungeon leads to a gate which brings you underneath the Wilderness.
D)There used to be a roach dungeon underneath Edgeville. It's used to train for higher leveled players who are F2P. I'm not sure if it's still there
South of Edgeville...
Barbarian Village: This was was formerly used to train range and mage, as of now, I'm not sure of its popularity for lower leveled players. Underneath the village, there's a stronghold that awards new plays with 10k and a set of combat boots.
East of Varrock...
Digsite and Exam Centre: I ***ociate these two places with the Desert Treasure and Temple at Sennististen quests. Other than that, I haven't done enough quests to know more.
South of the Exam Centre...
Mage Training Arena: I don't think anybody uses this anymore
Duel Arena: Players mostly come here to stake their money through fighting each other. You will either loose what you have or double it
Slightly South of the Duel Arena...
Al Kharid: I've only known this as a place where F2Pers train smithing and tan hide.
Citharede Abbey: I did not do the quest ***ociated with this place. West of the Abbey, desert wyrms can be slain.
South of Al Kharid...
Shantay P***:This is where you enter the Kharidian Desert. On world 100, this is a popular place to train Firemaking through the use of bonfires.
Hunter Areas: Orange salamanders are east of the Northernmost bridge of the River Elid. Crimson Skillchompas, a wonderful source of money, can be hunted South of the quarry. Granite can be mined at the quarry itself, which provides above average mining exp.
Bandit Camp: If you wear an item ***ociated with Saradomin or Zamorak, the people at the camp will target you for attack. This is useful for AFK training combat.
Desert Mining Camp: I only ***ociate this place with a quest.
Pyramid (East of the quarry): After the Desert Treasure quest, players can come here to gain a new spellbook.
Kalphite Hive (regular): This isn't even worth visiting, unless you want some potato cactus.
Exiled Kalphite Hive: This is arguably one of the best money making methods in the
game. Preferably, a person should kill the boss within this hive with a team. The drygore weapon drops are worth over 20M each and are the top melee weapons in the game.
Middle of the desert...
Pollinveach: Lower levels can slay desert goats here for some decent money. This town is also ***ociated with the Smoking Kills quest. This quest is important for anybody who plans on training Slayer.
Go more West...
Agility Pyramid: I don't know enough about this place, same applies to Nardah.
Ruins of Uzer: This entire place is ***ociated with The Golem quest. I believe the giant tower West of it is the Dominion Tower.
Far Far South...
Sophanem: This is most popularly known for Pyramid Plunder, a miame based around Thieving. I don't know anything about Menaphos.
Far Far in the Eastern lands (Morytania)...
I haven't cared for any quests in the Vampyre series. As a result, I know little about places such as the Castle Drakan, Sanguinesti Region, Meiyerditch, and the Abandoned Mine.
Far North of Morytania...
Slayer Tower: This place is extremely popular for its slayer monsters, from low to high. throughout your entire slayer experience, you will frequently visit this place for slayer tasks.
Canifis: Attacking any denizen of the town will turn them into a werewolf. Also, a low level slayer master can be found here
South of Canifis, that giant swamp...
Hunter: Green Salamanders can be hunt here for good exp and decent profit.
Mort Myre Swamp: Throughout this entire swamp, ghosts will attack you.
Mort'ton: The Shades of Mort'ton Miame can be played here.
Barrows: You can play the Barrows miame (dangerous) for a chance at a piece of Barrows armor.
Far North of the Runescape mainland...
The Wilderness: Through this entire span of black land, other players can attack you, and vice versa. The range of players who can attack you depend on the level of Wilderness you're standing on, as well as your own combat level. For example, if you stand on level 10 of the Wilderness while having a combat level of 110, any player ranging from 100-120 combat can fight you. After level 20 wilderness, you cannot teleport out, unless you use a tool such as the Amulet of Glory.
A)Boneyard, Graveyard of Shadows, Ruins, Dark warrior's Fortress, Forgotten Cemetery, volcano, and Bandit Camp: Other than for the sake of questing, I don't see much point to visiting these places.
B)Red Dragon Isle: This place is well known for the red dragons which can be killed here, as well as the white berry spawns, which can be picked up for money.
C)Lava Maze: A muddy key (dropped by chaos dwaves) can be used to open a chest inside the maze. This maze is known for the two runite rocks north of it. I believe this is the only place F2P players can mine runite. Last year, people had to traverse the Wilderness to kill the King Black Dragon near the maze. Now, there is a direct teleport there.
Far Northern Wilderness...
Deserted Keep: After pulling the lever from Edgeville or Ardougne, the player will be teleported directly here.
Scorpion Pit: I never go here, i'm pretty sure it's just a scorpion pit...
Rogues' Csstle: The Chaos Elemental boss spawns here. For the most part, it is not a popular moneymaking method.
Mage Arena: A lower leveled player can come here to get a free staff and unlock three new spells for the basic spellbook.
Agility Training Area: Sadly, if you haven't completed the Monkey Madness quest, you will be spending a lot of your time training agility here. Despite not risking any items, player killers will come here and kill you for fun.
That island connected to the Wilderness...
Daemonheim: The island itself is not a Wilderness zone. This place is dedicated to training the Dungeoneering skill. If you don't want to use a whip from 70-90 attack, you have to get 80 Dungeoneering to unlock the chaotic weapons. Dungeoneering also provides other highly useful rewards, such as a pocket item which buries bones for you, a necklace which gives you prayer points for every bone you bury (infinite prayer points!), and another pocket item that picks up charms for you. There are tons of other useful things here, please wiki them yourself.
The outlying islands, starting from the Northwest corner and going clockwise...
Lunar Isle: This island has an alter. If you pray at it, you will gain access to the Lunar Spellbook. People also come here to do the Livid Farm miame and kill Suqahs for a slayer task.
Pirate's Cove: I did not do the quest ***ociated with this.
Fremennik Isles (Neitiznot and Jatizso): This place is known as a great place to collect yak-hides. Neitiznot has a yak pen which lower leveled players can train at (or used to train at, before EOC). Jatizso has a shop which sells yak hides for a cheap price.
Waterbirth Island: A boat from Rellekka will take you here; This is where you fight the dagganoth kings.
Miscellania: After the Throne of Miscellania quest, you can gather free supplies from this place, which is a wonderful source of free money. After doing Throne of Miscellania, you might as well do the Royal Trouble quest for increased resources. This comes in the form of herbs, flax, fish, and logs above willow.
Iceberg: This is visitwed during the Cold War quest. I can't make any spoilers.
Botany Bay: Speak to a trial announcer by Ardougne, Varrock, Falador, or Edgeville to be teleported here. This is where some players and "tried" for botting.
Dragontooth Island: I don't know anything about this place
Mos Le'Harmless: This Island isn't harmless. The jungle is inhabited by aggressive beasts. The cavern underneath the island is filled with cave horrors. These monsters have a chance at dropping a valuable black mask, which can be used to construct a slayer helmet or re-sold for 1-2M.
Crash Island: You come here for a while during the Monkey Madness quest.
Ape Toll: This is where most of the Monkey Madness quest takes place. After the quest, it's used to train agility by players who are sick of the Wilderness. The caverns beneath ape toll also used to be a wonderful place for barraging Magic EXP or using chinchompas for Ranging EXP.
Karamja (North)
A)Musa point: Players usually get here by chartering a ship or taking the boat at Port Sarim. The dock to the north of Musa Point is the only spot F2P players can fish lobster and shark. On the valcano to the West, a dungeon can be accessd, which houses the boss to the Dragon Slayer quest, along with lesser demons to train on. There is also a entrance to the Tzhaar City, which was known as not only a wonderful place to train combat (pre-EOC), but the only place to get a fire cape.
Brimhaven Dungeon: Slightly South of the house portal, a dungeon entrance cam be found. Players commonly visit this dungeon to slay greater demons, black demons, iron dragons, and steel dragons.
B)Brimhaven: The Agility Arena below this town is like a miame, reach a spot on the dungeon before time runs out. There is also a bush patch by this town
Karamja (South)
Tai Bwo Wannai: This entire area is based on a miame which rewards you with trading sticks and tribal masks. Now, it is a terrible source of money and mostly abandoned.
Shilo village: When I was a new player, I would commonly mine the gem rocks here for money. There is also a fly fishing spot for training and a slayer master slightly lower than Kuradel.
Shipyard: You will visit this place during a couple of gnome quests.
Cairn isle: This place is visited for the Shilo Village quest.
Kharazi Jungle: I never go here, but it's accessed by starting the Legend's quest.
West of the Kharazi Jungle is the Herblore Habitat. Players can visit the jadinko lair, farm special vines for potions, and hunt other jadinkos for special ingredients. Although I never go here, the juju potions that result from this place give wonderful effects, such as 5% bonus prayer experience per hour.
Void Khts' Outpost (Pest Control): Be prepared to spend 20-40 hours on this island for a set of void armor. Void has low requirements to wear and is a wonderful offensive armor used even by some higher leveled players. Through half-afking pest control, I managed to finish all my homework out of boredom and write half of this.
Soul Wars: Nobody comes here anymore. I believe the only way to get here is if you manage to get a private group of friends to play the game with
If you're new to Runescape, you've probably seen this huge map and wondered where to start.
