Opening its beta in 2001, Runescape is considered an old, old game. Over the years of its existence, tens and even hundreds of thousands of players have come and gone, whether they be new players taking a glance at the game, or veterans who are satisfied by their accomplishments. Those veterans who stayed had carried on memories with them of the older game many years back, and many who quit had preferred the older version. As a result, Jagex released Oldschool Runescape in the middleof 2013. With many X-veterans coming back into the game and many players quitting EOC, the Runescape community ended up splitting.
Opinions vary greatly. Some people quit EOC because of the graphics, claiming that although the content is great, they don’t appreciate the new styles of things such as the new trees, buildings, armor, and animations. Others believe EOC is too easy; They feel as if newer players get experience rates too fast compared to veterans who had to level up at a time of disadvantage. A majority of people, though, feel as if the biggest flaw of EOC is the new combat system. The combat system was reworked to balance the use of melee, range, and mage, with an action bar added for special situations, yet many players miss the old system.
Many people who quit EOC not only have a distaste for the graphics, but simply believe that the layout is too complicated. On the OSRS servers, everything important (inventory, logout, buddy list, equipment, spells, prayer, stats, combat style, hp/run energy/prayer points and minimap) are thrown into the right side on your screen, with the chat box to the bottom. EOC, on the other hand, is customizable, with the ability to bind prayers, spells, and any screen to a special key. Along with this, you can drag anything around your screen for customization and easy access. On my personal loadout, I keep my inventory and minimap to the right, with my spells and prayers to the left (stacked on top of each other) for easy access. The two places below are the exact same place on Runescape, the Lumbridge Castle. On the medium graphics of EOC, it almost becomes a struggle to be recognizable
As EOC stands for the Evolution of Combat, the change in the combat system is (literally) what makes EOC, EOC. In the past, magic attacks would do high damage to users with melee armor, while melee armor would do well in protecting from ranged and melee attacks. Range armor would be weak against melee and range itself, but had the best defence against magic. Magic armor would be weak to anything, but was a necessity in accurately hitting magic attacks. As a result, players could wield a piece of ranged armor and melee armor while still hitting accurately with their melee and ranged attack weapons. As jagex felt this was unfair for magic, the EOC update not only made magic reliable for non-PVP situations, but as players wore armor not matching their combat style (such as a melee weapon with ranged armor to not get hit by magic), the accuracy of their combat style would fall. More commonly, players would also be able to attack multiple enemies at once without having to use a really special weapon or spell. My favorate example of this (and the magic rework) is shown through an EOC ability of dragon breath (shown below on the lowest graphic settings). On OSRS, I, unlike many people, find the simple combat style of "click and kill with a special attack" to be good and bad in their own ways.

Sadly, I have a lack of PVM experience on OSRS, and I haven't done any higher leveled PVM on EOC such as Nex, Kalaphite King, and Vorago because of my lack of teams, leading to my lack of screenshots on such bosses. Based on what I know, though, I feel as if EOC abilities allow for more unique bossing. Abilities such as provoke have to be used at certain times against the kalphite King to prevent your teammates from being done a ton of damage, making it slightly more interesting. Still, despite being a lower leveled PVM player, I still enjoy pvming on EOC more than I do on OSRS. Sure, many people will criticize EOC for being "Easyscape", but since the cash transfer rates from EOC to OSRS are 8:1, I myself find it completely ludicrous that I have to pay 56K EOC cash for a prayer potion on OSRS. Yes, many people will find the Loadstones, faster run energy replenishing, health regeneration, summoning, and faster EXP rates, and divine locations for skilling to be ludicrous, but I feel as if, for a newer generation of players, it makes the game less of a grind. I love how raw materials are becoming easier to gain. As the price of a coin goes down and the prices of raw materials drop harder, poorer, proier players don't have to grind for the supplies they want to train skills, while medium leveled players don't have to grind out the money they need. With that, my preference forEasyscape EOC comes with the wonderful loadstone network teleporting me everywhere for free, and the ability to accidentally leave auto-retaliate on and kill a Jad, once considered a challenging boss, so fast that I couldn't even screenshot both of them attacking me.
If there's one thing I see people loving on OSRS, it's the PVP and economy. I myself tried making a void pure account, only to loose my void range armor on my first time pking, because I suck. Needless to say again, I also don't wan't to pay 7,000 OSRS coins for a prayer potion and more than 500 coins for a shark. I started OSRS with the belief that the economy was better for newer players, a red chinchompa was worth about 16 times its value on EOC, and one raw shark on OSRS was worth about five raw sharks on EOC (considering the rates are still 1:8), but I didn't expect having to pay so much money for my own materials, such as supplies and weapons.
EOC, despite being my preference, has one (or two) things I feel to be terrible. I hate the micro-transactions. With the rising price of membership, I hate to have to pay money to unlock more content. I feel as if the money we put into Jagex's wallets, instead of coming up with content such as another boss or quest, they design new clothing, treasure hunter promotion items, and the cosmetic animations, only unlockable through either more grind or handing over another five bucks. Despite how people justify this by pointing out Jagex is a company, and companies have to make money, I feel as if it's the same thing as allowing Comcast to disconnect your internet in the middle of a PVP fight, but not getting mad because Comcast, being a company, should be allowed to do so. There's another analogy I've heard, about companies charging for DLCs that they shouldn't charge for, but I don't have enough experience with that issue to press. The option to buy exp is also very very sad (putting it lightly), especially since I'm pretty sure Jmods used to say how advantages such as these are unfair. Bonds also annoy me. I know; they allow players to give their in-game cash in exchange for membership, but it also makes Runescape a game with the option to pay and win.
